I am Amina, and I am a second-year Ph.D. student in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iowa. I am from New Jersey, and I completed my undergraduate degree in environmental systems engineering at Penn State. I have always appreciated the role the environment plays in my life, from providing a space to learn, play, grow food, and (most importantly) breathe. Sustaining its value for everyone is a key reason I am studying environmental engineering. Through Rooted, I aspire to learn more about the complex nature of sustainability and how it can bring us together.

My name is Luiza, I’m originally from Brazil where I got my bachelor’s and master’s degree in Environmental Engineering at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). In the Summer of 2016, I moved to the United States to pursue my Ph.D. in the Sustainable Water Development Graduate Program, at the University of Iowa. Now, I’m a third-year Ph.D. student, working with the Scherer Research Group to learn about the role of defects in iron mineral redox reactions. I have always been fascinated by sustainability and strongly believe that individual and local actions have a great importance when moving towards a sustainable future.

My name is Monica, and I am a second-year Ph.D. student in the Sustainable Water Development program at the University of Iowa. I am originally from Cincinnati, and it was there that I first became interested in the environment and sustainability. Since high school, I’ve worked on many different research projects with a focus on water quality, and I’ve had internships in city government and companies focused on improving water quality. I enjoy engaging with people of different backgrounds on the topic of sustainability, and I am very excited to do so as part of the Rooted podcast!
